Childhood Fever

Childhood Fever

What is a childhood fever?

Because of the normal variation in body temperature, there is no single value that is defined as fever. In general, a fever means a temperature above 98.4°F (38°C). You might get slightly different numbers depending on how you take your child's temperature – oral (mouth), axillary (armpit), ear, forehead, or rectal.

What is the main cause of fever in children?

Most fevers are caused by infections or other illnesses. The high body temperature makes it more difficult for the bacteria and viruses that cause infections to survive. Common conditions that can cause fevers include: upper respiratory tract infections (RTIs)
