A person suffering from constipation may experience painful or infrequent bowel motions. When a person passes little volumes of hard, dry stool during bowel movements, usually fewer than three times per week, it is generally thought that they are constipated. Having a bowel movement three times a day or three times a week, depending on the individual, may constitute typical stool elimination. Too much water absorption by the colon leads to hard, dry feces. The colon, commonly referred to as the large intestine, typically absorbs water as food passes through it and forms stool (waste products). The stool is subsequently propelled into the rectum by muscular contractions, and by the time it gets there, the majority of the water has been absorbed, solidifying the stool. Sluggish or slow-moving colonic muscle contractions cause the feces to pass through the colon too slowly, which increases the amount of water absorbed.
