Your body's response to generally safe substances causes allergies. The severity of allergy symptoms can range from minor to fatal. Antihistamines, decongestants, nasal steroids, asthma medications, and immunotherapy are all forms of treatment. Your body's response to an alien protein is an allergy. These proteins, or allergens, are typically benign. The immune system in your body overreacts when a specific protein is present in your body if you are allergic to it. Your body's reaction to an allergen is called an allergic reaction. If you have allergies, your body will produce immunoglobulin E (IgE) the first time you come into contact with an allergen. To create IgE, your immune system produces antibodies. Mast cells, or allergy cells, are found in your skin, respiratory system (airways), and mucous membrane in the hollow organs that link to one another from your mouth to your anus (gastrointestinal or GI tract). IgE antibodies bind to these mast cells.
